You've Gotta Do the Work

This past weekend I attended the Women and Happiness: The Give and Take of Finding Joy workshop in NYC.  The speakers included Geneen Roth, Brene Brown, Loung Ung and Elizabeth Lesser.  AMAZING!

So many times over the last few months leading into the weekend, I debated about getting my money back.  I was excited of course but there were two Lacrosse games I was going to miss and should I really be spending so much money on a workshop right now…blah blah blah blah blah.

I am so grateful I followed my gut and went to this amazing workshop.  It is hard to put into words how insightful and uplifting the workshop was.  I had so many “wake me up” moments this weekend.

One of the most important things that I am taking away from the weekend is that you need to do the work to solve any issue you may be having.  I have so many Self-Help/Inspiration books that if I stacked them high, they would be taller than I am.  But it is not enough to read the books; you need to do the work.

When reading a self-help book an exercise will be presented, instead of taking the time to stop, think and explore I will skip the exercise and keep reading.  I am hoping the next passage contains the words of wisdom that I need to change my life or stop that bad habit.    The faster I get to that magical passage the sooner I will be fixed.  Hallelujah!

But what I am doing is skipping over the most important part.  The “fixing” comes from paying attention to me and my thoughts; sitting in the discomfort of these exercises so that I can move forward. By not taking the time to answer some questions and take deeper looks, I stay stuck in the dull place.

Work people, work, that is what I need to be doing.  Journaling, people, journaling, that is what you are going to see out of me.

Now I said it, I have to do it. Right!?!

Have a great weekend! Take some time to check out Paint Party Friday.

Oh and if you get a chance stop by Crescendoh on Monday.  I am guest curating.

  2. I was the same way but that's ok. The time has to be right for you to have that aha moment. :) Don't feel like you missed on anything it's what you needed at that time and this is what you need right now. :) I'm looking forward to seeing your journaling. :)

  7. I need this hanging in my closet to silence the "nay sayer". To clarify, I have a nook in my closet that is "my space" and is all about me. Can't paint there but love to add bits to it to make it more of a reminder of who I am. Too much information! Loved your work.

  14. Oh so true! I am also really bad about skipping the work and reading the passages waiting for the magic to happen, I do it with art books all the time, as though just reading about a technique will be enough.

Love your journal page, it's really lovely.
